You're Not Behind, Don't Wait Until September
Why pressing pause on your health this summer is the biggest mistake you can make and how consistency, not perfection, is what truly transforms your body.
Every July, I notice the same pattern.
Summer is in full swing. Vacations are booked, patios are busy, cottages are calling, and calendars are packed with weddings, birthdays, concerts, and family gatherings. It is a season meant for making memories, slowing down, and enjoying life.
And yet, it is also the time of year when so many women quietly give up on themselves.
As a women’s wellness coach, I hear the same things over and over again: “I’ll get back on track after vacation.” “Summer is just too busy.” “I’ve already blown it, so I’ll start fresh in September.”
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know that you are not alone. But I also want to lovingly challenge that mindset because it usually has very little to do with food, vacations, or missed workouts. It has everything to do with the belief that if you cannot do everything perfectly, there is no point in doing anything at all.
And that belief is far more damaging than any slice of pizza, scoop of ice cream, or week away could ever be.
The “Starting Over” Mindset
One of the biggest transformations I witness in my clients has very little to do with the number on the scale. It is the moment they stop believing they need to keep starting over.
Think about how many Mondays, Januaries, “after the holidays,” “after vacation,” or “once life calms down” moments you have promised yourself would be the time you finally got back on track.
The truth is, life rarely calms down.
There will always be birthdays, vacations, work deadlines, family responsibilities, unexpected stress, and busy seasons. If your health only exists when life is quiet, your health will always feel temporary.
Real wellness is not something you start and stop. It is something you carry with you, even when life is not perfect.
Summer Isn’t the Problem
I often hear women say, “Summer completely throws me off.” But when we dig deeper, summer usually is not the problem. Summer simply exposes habits that were never fully established.
Summer actually gives us so many opportunities to support our health. We have fresh seasonal produce, longer days, more time outdoors, farmers’ markets, walks, sunshine, and often a little more flexibility in our schedules.
The challenge is not summer. The challenge is believing that health only counts when every meal is perfectly planned, every workout is completed, and every routine is followed exactly.
That is not wellness. That is perfectionism. And perfectionism is exhausting.
Your Body Doesn’t Know It’s July
Your body does not know it is summer.
Your thyroid does not suddenly stop needing support because you are on vacation. Your hormones do not take July and August off. Your metabolism is not keeping score of how many barbecues you attended.
What your body responds to is much simpler: patterns and consistency.
One indulgent meal does not create weight gain, just like one salad does not create health. Your body responds to the environment you create over time. That is why abandoning your healthy habits for two or three months every summer often has a bigger impact than enjoying the occasional dessert ever will.
The Hidden Cost of Waiting Until September
When women decide they are “waiting until September,” they often do not realize what they are actually postponing.
They are not just postponing weight loss. They are postponing better energy, better sleep, reduced inflammation, thyroid support, balanced blood sugar, improved digestion, lower stress, strength, and confidence.
They are putting their health on hold.
And by September, many women feel even more overwhelmed because now they are trying to undo two or three months of habits they never needed to abandon in the first place.
Imagine how different September could feel if, instead of restarting, you simply kept going. Not perfectly. Just consistently.
The Women Who Maintain Their Results Think Differently
After coaching hundreds of women through hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, PMOS, previously known as PCOS, perimenopause, menopause, burnout, and insulin resistance, I have noticed something important.
The women who maintain their results for years do not necessarily have more discipline, willpower, or motivation. They simply stopped viewing healthy living as something they do until summer.
They made it part of who they are.
Instead of asking, “Can I stay on track this weekend?” they ask, “How can I take care of myself while still enjoying this weekend?”
That small shift changes everything.
They enjoy the birthday dinner, then eat a nourishing breakfast the next morning. They miss a workout while traveling, then go for a walk. They enjoy dessert without guilt because they understand that one choice does not define their health.
It is the next choice that matters most.
What Consistency Actually Looks Like
Consistency does not mean never missing a workout, never eating dessert, or never taking a vacation.
Consistency means returning to your habits without guilt, without punishment, and without feeling like you failed.
Think about brushing your teeth. If you forget one night, you do not throw away your toothbrush and decide to start again next month. You simply brush your teeth the next morning.
Your health deserves that same mindset.
Your body does not need another fresh start. It needs consistency. And consistency is built by making the next best choice, not the perfect one.
The Five Habits I’d Encourage Every Woman to Keep This Summer
If I could simplify summer wellness down to a few habits, these are the ones I would ask every woman to protect.
Prioritize Protein
Whether you are eating at home, on vacation, or at your favourite patio, ask yourself one simple question: “Where is my protein?”
Protein supports muscle, blood sugar, metabolism, satiety, hormone production, and recovery. For women navigating hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, PMOS, perimenopause, or menopause, getting enough protein is not optional. It is foundational.
It does not have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional.
Keep Walking
Walking remains one of the most underrated tools for women’s health.
It supports insulin sensitivity, digestion, stress reduction, recovery, and overall metabolic health without placing unnecessary stress on the body.
Whether it is twenty minutes after dinner, walking through a new city on vacation, or taking a sunrise walk on the beach, every step counts.
Movement does not have to be exhausting to be effective.
Don’t Forget Your Strength
One of the biggest mistakes I see women make in the summer is putting strength training on pause.
Your goal is not simply to lose weight. Your goal is to build a strong, resilient body.
Muscle supports metabolism, improves insulin sensitivity, protects bone health, and helps you age with strength and independence. Think of muscle as your metabolic savings account. The more you invest in it today, the more it pays you back later.
Hydrate Before You Feel Thirsty
Summer heat, travel, patios, and increased activity all raise your fluid needs.
Dehydration can show up as fatigue, headaches, cravings, brain fog, and low energy. Before assuming you need another coffee or snack, ask yourself whether you have had enough water.
Sometimes the simplest habits create the biggest results.
Protect Your Sleep
Summer often brings later nights, travel, and changes in routine. That is normal.
But one late night does not need to become a full week of poor sleep.
Sleep supports cortisol regulation, thyroid function, insulin sensitivity, hunger hormones, recovery, mood, and energy. Whenever possible, return to your routine.
Your body loves rhythm.
Wellness Should Make Your Life Bigger, Not Smaller
Somewhere along the way, wellness became associated with restriction.
People began believing that being healthy meant saying no to dinners, skipping birthday cake, avoiding vacations, or feeling guilty every time life did not go according to plan.
I do not believe that is wellness.
Wellness should give you more freedom, not less. It should give you the energy to travel, the confidence to wear the swimsuit, the stamina to chase your children or grandchildren, and the health to hike the trail you have always wanted to explore.
It should allow you to sit on a patio with friends, enjoy a beautiful meal, and leave without guilt.
If your version of health requires you to stop living your life, it is probably not healthy.
Think Beyond This Summer
When summer ends, what do you want to be proud of?
Not the number on the scale. Not the size of your jeans. But the woman you became.
Will you be proud that you waited until September to take care of yourself? Or will you be proud that, even when life got busy, you continued choosing yourself in small, meaningful ways?
A twenty-minute walk. A protein-rich breakfast. An extra glass of water. Going to bed thirty minutes earlier. Preparing one healthy meal instead of ordering takeout.
None of these choices seem extraordinary on their own. But together, they become a lifestyle.
And lifestyles create lasting results.
One Final Thought
If you have spent the last few weeks making memories with the people you love, I hope you continue to do exactly that.
Go on the trip. Celebrate the birthday. Order dessert if you want it. Watch the sunset. Laugh until your stomach hurts. Life was never meant to be lived inside a perfectly colour-coded meal plan.
But do not confuse enjoying your life with giving up on your health.
The two can absolutely exist together.
You do not need another “Day One.” You do not need to wait until September. You do not need to earn the right to start again. You simply need to make your next decision a healthy one. Then another. And another.
The women who succeed are not the women who never fall off track.
They are the women who never stop coming back.
So if you need permission to stop waiting, this is it.
Your healthiest summer is not waiting for you in September.
It is waiting for you today.
